Iowa’s Decrease in State Troopers
DUBUQUE- Iowa’s highways have been seeing a continual decrease in state troopers.
Going from a staff of 379 in the early 2000’s to only 260 troopers today, numbers have reached a significant low. This raises concern for both officer and public safety. Accrediting the problem to budgeting and low funding, local troopers today must take on more responsibility.
Iowa State Trooper, Jeff Driscoll elaborates, “I’m the only trooper from Dubuque to Waterloo today on Highway 20 so I’m covering a lot of mileage where back in the early 2000’s there probably would’ve been four or five troopers within that area but now I’m out there by myself.”
The state of Iowa is on the hunt for qualified applicants to join the academy.
