New Offense, New Records

LORAS COLLEGE – Duhawks football has been what some people may call a┬ástagnant offense for the past three years only helping the Duhawks to four victories in that time frame. Enter new Head Coach Steve Helminiak, who was the offensive coach, and a new offensive philosophy. Now the Duhawks are breaking multiple records each and every week, even down to some of their backups with injuries playing a part.

‘Making the change was difficult,’ says Helminiak, but it’s turned out to be worth it. Nik Schulte, who began the year as the third string quarterback, now holds the record for most passing yards (588), passing touchdowns (6) and most attempts (64) and completions (47) in a game. Now the Duhawks want to go as fast as they can. ‘When we don’t huddle, it doesn’t allow the defense to substitute and they can’t make the necessary adjustments they need to make in time.’

The switch has worked for the Duhawks thus far, but with conference play nearing, teams who are more familiar with the Duhawks may have an easier time defending what the Duhawks bring on offense. ‘It’s our job to learn as much as we can, figure out what works and what doesn’t and do different things to be successful,’ says Helminiak, meaning we might be seeing more surprises from the Duhawk offense as the season progresses.
