Men’s Basketball seek change

LORAS COLLEGE – Late Tuesday afternoon Loras Athletic Director Denise Udelhofen announced that head men’s basketball coach Greg Gorton was relieved was his duties effective immediately.

Gorton spent thirteen years with Loras, nine of which were spent as the head coach for the Duhawks compiling 117 wins with 117 losses. In his first year leading the Duhawks, Loras went 22-7 overall with a 13 and 3 record in conference claiming the conference title.

Unfortunately their trips to the conference tournament since then have been few and far between and lately have resulted in early exits such as the one this year to 6th seeded Central, who went on to win the Iowa Conference with wins over Dubuque and Wartburg.

Current associate head coach Buddy Sodemann will serve as interim head coach until a replacement is named. Loras will begin their search immediately to find Gorton’s replacement.

The new head coach will have a lot to work with in the backcourt as the Duhawks will return leading scorer Justin Vanwambeke along with current freshman Ryan DiCanio, Demond George and Michael Mims, but the test will be replacing the production in the pain where the Duhawks will lose points and rebounds machine Mirko Grcic and their big defensive stalwart Justin Schneider.
