“Catching” Up With Baseball and Softball Pitching
DUBUQUE, IA – In an attempt to explain the intricacies of baseball pitching, last week I played a game of catch with Sophomore pitcher Pat Moriarty. We discussed topics like why the baseball team needs 14 pitchers, what advantages throwing different pitches brings, and even why some players throw side arm compared to the traditional over the top arm angle.

Having so much fun “Tossing With Pat”, and curious now about how baseball and softball pitching differs, I decided to give Senior Pitcher Makaila Haase a call. Learning that softball pitchers can come back into the game after they are taken out, the different pitches that can be throw, and even how to properly warm up before you pitch were all highlights of our conversation. Perhaps the most entertaining part of “Tossing With Makaila” came at the end of our chat when I challenged Makaila to see if I could get a hit off of her masterful pitching.

Having a great time, and learning a lot more about pitching, I would deem this two part series a great success!
