7-game win streak going into playoffs

The Loras College men’s soccer team is on a seven consecutive win streak since the start of October. The team advanced their overall record to 11-5, giving them a shot to finish with the No. 2 seed in the conference.

“We control our own destiny at this point,” said Head Coach Dan Rothert. “If we win out, we get second place, and we host a conference tournament game.”

Highlights from the team’s win streak included wins over Simpson College and Wartburg College on Oct. 15 and 17, respectively. These teams are well built competitors in the IIAC conference. The wins launched them towards the desired high seed in conference.

Earlier in the season, Luther College was first place in the IIAC conference, but the Duhawks held the Storm 2-0 during their game on Oct. 15.

This left Simpson College as another strong opponent in the conference. On Oct. 15, Loras took down Simpson College here in the Rock bowl with a score of 1-0. The only goal of the game was by junior midfielder Javi Simon who scored in the 25th minute. Simon was assisted by sophomore midfielder Mark Broderick. Senior goalkeeper Jacob Peterson had five saves throughout the game. In the 35th minute, Simpson forward Garret Pochop fired a shot to the top corner of the goal. Peterson forced a dive and was able to ricochet the ball away from the goal for a memorable save.

“Jacob is special and that’s what he’s in the goal for to make those types of saves, but I thought we controlled the play, I thought we had chances of finishing them off earlier especially in the first half, we got some pretty good looks even the second half,” said Rothert. “It’s a nail-biter when it’s one-nothing; it always is because anything can happen.”

After the win over Simpson, another intense game against Wartburg College happened on the road in Waverly, Iowa. The teams went back and forth with Wartburg leading the way scoring the first goal in the 15th minute. Sophomore midfielder Mark Broderick was able to tie the game in the 65th minute. He was assisted by junior forward Joshua Niloff.

The back and forth continued with Wartburg scoring again in the 72nd minute. The Duhawks responded ten minutes later in the 81st minute with Broderick leading the way. Broderick earns his second goal of the game, assisted by freshman midfielder Danny Chavarria to eventually send the game into overtime. The game winning goal by sophomore midfielder Kody Rife, was a 40-yard blast to the top corner. There is video of the goal is on the Loras College men’s soccer twitter page.

If the team wins on Oct. 24, they will most likely earn second place, however they could also get first. In addition, the team is likely to host a playoff game here in the Rock bowl if victorious. The dates are still to be determined but can be found on Duhawks.com
