This past week, part of the Loras College Dance Marathon leadership team was invited to tour the new University of Iowa Children’s hospital before its grand opening next month. This hospital, which was renamed the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, serves as another way for children with cancer and their parents to get the care they need comfortably.
The most rewarding part of the leadership team’s trip was to tour and get a preview of the new playroom, which has been dedicated to Loras College Dance Marathon for their efforts in fundraising and helping to build the new hospital. The group held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for those at the hospital and were able to network with other Dance Marathons from around Iowa.

Dance Marathon has been known as the largest fundraiser per capita at Loras for several years, and is not only supportive of the miracle kids and families they fundraise for, but also for other dance marathons around the state. The event, hosted every April, draws students from all years at Loras to participate and dance with miracle kids and families while raising money for 12 consecutive hours.

dm2-cmykAlong with Loras’ donated playroom, the hospital also has other features that will help many patients who come to the hospital for care. Many of the rooms are now accommodating of not just the patient at the hospital, but also has room for patient’s families and siblings to stay with them. Additionally, the hospital includes a library, interactive theatre, cafeteria and a view of Kinnick Stadium, home of the Iowa Hawkeyes, which can be seen from the 12th floor of the building. On top of this, the hospital will include the state-of-the-art technology that has been effective in helping children fight cancer and recover in the best possible ways.

In addition to the tour of the hospital and the playroom, Dance Marathon has also been nominated to receive the Crawford Cares Award. This $1,500 award, which is given to a non-profit organization, would be given directly to the new University of Iowa Children’s Hospital to help with further projects the hospital has planned, as well as helping to purchase new technology in the hopes of finding a cure for cancer. Voting for this award takes place online and is open through Nov. 27.
