Dubuque County is one of 95 Iowa Counties that now can text 911.
Text-to-911 allows users to receive help in situations where it may not be safe to make a call.
The service can’t determine location, so responders need texters to provide them with the most accurate location possible.
Mark Murphy, Dubuque 911 Center Manager, said that this service can not only benefit those who may be hearing impaired, but also those who may be in dangerous situations like domestic abuse, where they may not be able to call for help.
Murphy recommends sending other information in the initial text message too, including the description of the patient. This allows responders to send help as soon as possible.
Verizon is currently the only carrier supported in Dubuque County, but more carriers are looking to join soon.
