LORAS COLLEGE — On the eve of Saturday’s home game against Central College…the Loras football team had a change within the coaching staff.
Athletic Director Bob Quinn accepted the resignation of head coach Paul Mierkiewicz early Friday morning with three games remaining in his third season at the helm of the Duhawk football team.
Quinn named offensive line coach Steve Helminiak as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Helminiak has been with the Loras coaching staff for the last three seasons. He has previous coaching head coaching experience at Southern Oregon University.
During Mierkiewicz’s time as the Duhawks head coach…the team went 4-23 overall, including 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the Iowa Conference. At the time of Mierkiewicz’s resignation, Loras ranked last in the conference in scoring with 11.4 points per game and scoring defense, allowing 37.3 points per game.
LCTV reached out to Paul Mierkiewicz and he told us that he will miss his time being on campus.
“Coaching at Loras was like being home again. It was great to be back and be a part of the Loras family,” says Mierkiewicz. “I wanted to end my career where it began..but it just didn’t work out. It was a tough decision..but I wish everyone the best moving forward.”
Quinn said the search for a new coach will begin at the end of the season.
“We will find the person that will best lead this institution’s football program and this athletic department and this institution quite frankly…in a direction that will produce men of character and integrity that will compete at the highest level.”
In Helminiak’s first game as interim head coach, Loras lost to Central College, 48-3. Loras’ final two games of the 2013 regular season are at the University of Dubuque in the “Key City Clash” for the “Key of Dubuque,” and at home against Wartburg College.
