The best part about having a favorite sports team, is playing the team you hate the most.
Every team has one. This rivalry is unique, this rivalry is special.
Who is Loras College’s biggest rival?
What started in the early 1900s, the UD and Loras rivalry has been a battle ever since.
“This is an unusual rivalry because we’re in the same city.” Said head coach Steve Helminiak.
“It adds a little more intensity and bragging rights.”
How do students describe this rivalry?
“Passionate, that’s for sure.” Said student athlete Aaron Miller.
“We just kind of hate each other.” Said student athlete Jeffrey Budz. “I have cousins in the area who drive by UD and boo every time they pass it.”
“In the early 1900s they played a game in which UD won, there was a riot after the game, so it never got off on the right foot.” Helminiak adds.
Loras is preparing for this matchup by looking at UD as a football team first and a rivalry second. “They’re a really well coached team.” said Helminiak.
No matter the outcome, the Loras/UD rivalry is here to stay.
