LORAS COLLEGE – In the heart of a Dubuque winter, fall weather may seem light years away. Despite the cold, Loras is buzzing with excitement for the future of Duhawk football.
In his first full offseason as head coach, Steve Helminiak has put a focus on landing big time recruits. Evaluating players happens with a three step process including finding talent, making sure they are an academic match for Loras, and finally making sure the player has high character that will fit in with the precedence set by the football team. Once those players are found, it is the coaches job to get the athletes to commit to Loras.
Although there are many ways of attracting in these athletes, one of the more unconventional ways that coach Helminiak likes to utilize is taking the news to social media. Using the hashtag, “futureflock”, the coaching staff is stirring up quite an interest in Duhawk football.
When asked about the twitter strategy, Coach Helminiak said, “Essentially what will happen is [the committed recruits] will start to communicate with other recruits that we’re looking at, and other recruits that we’re looking at will communicate with them”.
While there are NCAA rules on how social media can be used in dealing with recruits, when used correctly, social media can be a useful tool to help improve the team for years to come.
