Temperatures are dropping in Dubuque and people are pulling out their portable space heaters.According to Dubuque fire marshal, Mark Burkle, space heaters are responsible for about half of the heater-related fires in the U.S. 24% of home heating fires were caused because of portable heaters being too close to items able to catch on fire.
In order to use a space heater safely and correctly, the portable heater needs to be at least 3 feet from anything flammable. Also, do not use an extension cord with the heater, and turn off your space heater when leaving the room or when going to sleep.
When shopping for a space heater make sure you get the right size portable heater heater for the amount of space. Also try and find a portable heater with tip-over and overheat protection. Last, shop for a heater with safety certification.
These preventions and safety options will cut down on the amount of heater-related fires in the U.S.
