DUBUQUE, IA-Shop with the Cop is a national program mainly run around the holidays so kids can have presents for Christmas.
Nevertheless, the importance news clothes and school supplies was recognized by the Dubuque Police Department. Local businesses and donors heard the police were starting up this program and were able to donate over 17,000 dollars which benefited over 100 kids in the Dubuque area.
The families, like Aiden’s were chosen by the officers who work in the schools and each family was able to come into Target and spend close to 150 dollars each.
Kids were able to buy new shoes, coats, long sleeve shirts, socks, underwear, and school supplies such as notebooks and backpacks.
Kurt Rosenthal, an officer with the Dubuque Police Department says, “We had to rach out to donors in the community and between families and businesses we were able to come out today and raise a lot of money.”
This program benfits kids in the Dubuque community who may not be able to afford the basic items needed to start the new school year.
Rosenthal says the program will be something they look forward to having in the future. “Hopefully we can help more kids out every year this has been awesome so far here today.”
