After a year of work and about $9.5 million, construction on Dalzell Field in finally complete.
The upgrades for the new stadium include new turf on the field, a bigger track, new bleachers, and a memorial plaza commemorating Senior football legends Wilbur Dalzell and Jay Berwanger.
Members of the Dalzell and Berwanger family attended a private ceremony this weekend – sharing memories of the beloved field.
The grandson of Wilbur Dalzell shared a family secret: “My grandfather was so dedicated to this city and this school that when he passed away, his two sons said that there was only one thing to do. In the dark of the night, they went out to the 50 yard line and spread his ashes, so that he would forever be in a place that meant so much to him.”
Community members also came out this weekend to attend a public dedication ceremony. Members of the Senior and Hempstead band each played their school’s fight song, inviting their students to gather on the track. To officially break in the new stadium, students and alum walked one lap around the track together.
The field renovation was funded by the one-cent sales tax, and the memorial plaza was made possible by private donors.
