Michelle and Beverly are the breast of friends. The two take part in a unique support group, a floating support group.
Michelle spoke on the significance of the group, “It has changed my life, just a reason to keep going.”
Both Michelle and Beverly are members of the Breast of Friends- a group of breast cancer survivors that participate in an unusual sport: dragon boat racing.
Michelle said, “Studies have shown that it helps emotional and physical with breast cancer and it helps prevent lymphedema.”
While every year brings new challenges and survivors to the group, this year in particular is taking the Breast of Friends in a special direction. “It’s the first time we’ve had a sponsor.” Michelle said.
With the help of East Dubuque Nitrogen Fertilizers the group gets to bring back something special that they’ve strayed away from in the past few years, donating money for free mammograms.
You read that right, absolutely free.
Team member Beverly Bellows said, “We really want to get the awareness message out there and make sure we’re taking care of other people besides ourselves.”
Mammograms are expensive and the group is hoping to help local women with this problem by partnering with a local gym: True Fitness.
True will be putting on programs all month long to help raise awareness and funds for the groups cause… a fulfilling life.
Beverly said, “There’s life after breast cancer, you know that’s not the be all end all and we’re all here to show them that we can do that.”
The Breast of Friends will be having a Chili Feed Fundraiser on October 20th at Courtside Sports Bar and Grill in Dubuque.
