PLATTEVILLE, WI – In 2002, the Platteville business district was still in it’s infancy. In fact it was just a cornfield. But the completion of the highway 151-expansion project in 2005 paved the way for a new development of businesses transforming this small Wisconsin town. More than 40 businesses have ventured to Platteville including Walmart, Menards, Farm and Fleet, and more.
Joe Schneller, with Platteville Development Group, says a new business is opening in just a few months. Benvenuto’s, an Italian Bar and Grill is expected to open around mid-June in the business district.
Platteville City officials also agree the major reason for Plattville’s expansion is the University of Wisconsin-Plattville continuing expansion of students, which means the university is building more housing.
UWP has been expanding since the early 2000’s due to the Tri-State Initiative. Students who are residents of Iowa and Illinois pay the same price as Wisconsin to attend Platteville and this is appealing to many students. UWP has an estimated 7,000 students on campus.
From the highway to the new businesses and the growth of the school, Kathy Kopp, director of the Chamber of Commerce, says “The stars have aligned and everything is working.”
