DUBUQUE, Iowa– With all the attention ADA certification has had in the Dubuque area, I was interested in learning more about the inspection process.
That’s when I met Katrina Wilberding.
At 32 years old, Katrina Wilberding was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Wilberding now relies on a wheelchair and a service dog to help her with day to day activities.
As a member of Proudly Accessable Dubuque, Wilberding helps area businesses become ADA certified.
“If we can make Businesses understand why it is important” Said Wilberding.
So far, Proudly Accessable Dubuque has helped over 300 Businesses in the Dubuque area.
After having interviewed Katrina, she told me when she was younger she enjoyed walking around, just like myself…I just could not imagine what would feel like to have that taken away from me, so I decided to take a challenge and spend a couple of hours in a wheelchair in Downtown Dubuque to see the positives and negatives people in wheelchairs face everyday.
Through the experience, I learned many things I am not even able to describe with words. It was interesting to see the downtown area from a whole different perspective. It is something I will never forget.
