VATICAN CITY, Italy – At 7 minutes after 1pm central standard time, white smoke emerged from the chimney over the Sistine Chapel signaling a new pope has been elected.
Just under an hour later Cardinal Bergoglio now Pope Francis appeared to greet the crowds below.
Pope Francis the 1st makes papal history becoming not only the first Jesuit but also the first pope from Latin America.
“He also represents a huge part of our church which is in Latin America. Probably half of the Catholics in the world live in Latin America”
Bergoglio was born in Argentina and became the 266th pope and is76 years old. Many believe he was the runner-up to Benedict XVI 8 years ago. As predicted,Catholics will have a Pope in place for Easter celebrations later this month.
